UpdateFlorida: Black children more likely to be punished in school

Black children more likely to be punished in school: " Black students in Florida's public schools have been punished far more often than their white or Hispanic classmates and in numbers disproportionate to their population. Black elementary students, for example, made up 54 percent of the elementary students issued out-of-school suspensions in the 2005-06 school year, but only 23 percent of the public school population, according to figures from the Florida Department of Education. Hispanic and white students, on the other hand, were issued suspensions -- both the in-school and out-of-school type -- in numbers that were proportionate to their populations, or far smaller. The same racial discrepancies occurred in the state's middle and high schools. Black students were handed out punishments in numbers disproportionate to their population. Data shows similar discrepancies occurred in 2003 and 2004.
